Dirge of the Baleful Dying Sunset

It had been a long time since Balerion had been to the peacelands.
The last time he'd been here, Bale had been little more then a colt. All long-legged and unsure of the future, he had stood here nervously, unwilling to take a step forward. He had stood here frozen for a long time, and time had seemed to stop, until he put one hoof before the other and made his way- his own way- into the whedab territories.
That had made all the difference, really.
Now, again, he found himself here. Again, it was a transitive period in his life. Sthyr had many subherds in his kingdom, and for a long time, Balerion had been a member of one, of no great import or significance. Even the most placid of herds-- which his had not been, was immune to the politics of stallions, however. A new, younger leader had taken the herd, and ousted all the males-- including Bale.
Balerion had no fondness for this new leader-- little more then a colt-- and less for staying in the herd as a low-ranking stallion, so he'd left when they had turned on him, with only a few cursory kicks at the heads of his ousters. Now, as he wandered in the peacelands, he wondered if this was cause for regret. Perhaps he should turn and challenge that stupid colt, take the herd for himself-- he probably could, he doubted that young one knew much about where to send hooves in a fight.
But those thoughts typically left as soon as they came; the power-structure of a herd was a fragile thing, and ousting a new leader so quickly would only make it more so, send signs to the neighbors that the herd was weak. They might steal mares from under him-- or worse, convince them to go when he was not looking, and provide them safe passage. He didn't have eyes on his ears, he could not see everything at once.
So, for now, he wandered, ill at ease and unsure of what to do next. He would return to the treacherous lands of the whedab, with it's deserts and poison lakes, in due time. For now, though, he needed time to think, unfettered by the familiar faces and familiar politics of his homeland. |
